Francesco Angelico

Cello

Sicilian-born cellist Francesco Angelico began studying cello at the age of twelve under Maurizio Salemi and Enrico Dindo.

He completed the advanced specialization courses held by Giovanni Sollima at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and is currently attending the Master in Performance at mdw — University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2023 he was chosen by Riccardo Muti as principal cello of the Orchestra Luigi Cherubini.

In many of his performances he integrates written repertoire with spontaneous improvisation, exploring a contemporary and deeply personal sound language.

A passionate chamber musician from the beginning of his artistic path, he recorded the sonatas of Mario Pilati in a world premiere recording, as well as works by Alfredo Casella and Claude Debussy for Movimento Classical.

In 2022 he made his solo debut with piano at Teatro La Fenice in Venice and at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Sala Esedra. In 2024, within the chamber music season of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, he performed in Sala Petrassi alongside artists such as Andrea Lucchesini, Sonig Tchakerian and Franco Petracchi. In the same year he gave the world premiere of Morfemi, a cello concerto by A. Amici.

He has appeared as a soloist for major institutions including Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Noto Music Festival, Ascoli Piceno Festival, Amici della Musica di Verona, Ravenna Festival, AME, Amici della Musica di Ancona, Fenice Sacay in Osaka and the Muzieksaal of Tilburg. He has also attended masterclasses with Mario Brunello, Frans Helmerson, Jens Peter Maintz, Stephan Kropfitsch and Mischa Maisky.
